Vortex Studio is a real-time simulation platform from CM Labs designed for creating, deploying, and validating high-fidelity mechanical simulations. It is used across training, engineering, automation, and interactive simulation workflows where accurate representation of mechanical systems is required.
The platform provides tools for transforming 3D models into interactive mechanisms, including defining parts, assemblies, collision geometries, constraints, and control interfaces. It can also be used as the foundation for customized real-time simulation products and equipment simulation applications.
Vortex Studio 2026.6 expands its remote simulation, rendering, distributed simulation, vehicle, and integration capabilities. The release introduces the Vortex Environment Interface, GPU upscaling for the Vulkan renderer, external file distribution for distributed simulations, and additional Python and Unity integration functionality.

Software Overview
Vortex Studio provides a development environment for building interactive simulations of mechanical systems. Its simulation technology is used in CM Labs equipment simulation products and can also support customized applications for industries requiring realistic mechanical behavior and interactive training or engineering environments.
The Vortex Environment Interface (VEI) provides a gRPC-based connection between external applications and the simulation engine. It supports trial-based simulation workflows, structured observations and actions, simulation state resets, automated testing, reinforcement learning, embodied agent development, and custom step-loop workflows. A Python client is included in the vortex_remote wheel.
The platform also supports distributed simulation workflows. In Vortex Studio 2026.6, external files required by a simulation can be distributed to simulation nodes, helping keep configuration files, textures, and other external assets synchronized across the nodes.
Key Features
  • Create, deploy, and validate high-fidelity real-time mechanical simulations.
  • Develop interactive mechanisms from 3D models.
  • Define parts, assemblies, collision geometries, and mechanical constraints.
  • Connect external applications to simulations through the Vortex Environment Interface.
  • Drive VEI simulation trials using the included Python client.
  • Support reinforcement learning, automated testing, and custom simulation step loops through VEI.
  • Run distributed simulations with external file distribution.
  • Use Vulkan GPU upscaling with Bilinear, AMD FSR 1.0, or Lanczos modes.
  • Configure rendering resolution through a pixel budget for GPU resource management.
  • Load and unload Vortex mechanisms at runtime from Unity.
  • Assign stable IDs to runtime-loaded mechanism instances through the Vortex Integration C API.
  • Use external file support with Unity integration workflows.
  • Edit and manage keyframes directly through the Keyframe UI.
  • Save and restore keyframes using external files.
  • Use New Wheel Adapter outputs for ground reaction forces, torques, and kinematics.
  • Use Vx::VxEnum fields as VEI observations and actions.
  • Use integer scalar fields as VEI observations and actions.
  • Use supported vector fields as VEI observation data.
  • Monitor detailed GPU memory usage through the Vulkan renderer debug overlay.
What's New
Vortex Studio 2026.6 introduces the Vortex Environment Interface (VEI), providing a gRPC-based service for external control of trial-based simulations. The associated Python package adds EnvironmentClient, Trial, Observation, and Action classes for driving VEI workflows.
The release expands Unity integration with runtime mechanism loading and unloading, stable mechanism IDs, and distributed external file handling. External File support allows configuration files, textures, and other required assets to be distributed across simulation nodes.
The Vulkan renderer now supports Bilinear, AMD FSR 1.0, and Lanczos GPU upscaling modes, together with optional RCAS sharpening and configurable render resolution limits. Keyframe management has also been expanded to support saving and restoring keyframes from external files.
The Modular Vehicle System has been updated to use the New Wheel Adapter, while the legacy wheel adapter based on the tire type has been removed from the toolbox. Existing content using the previous extensions remains functional, but updating to the new adapter is recommended.
Rendering fixes address flickering and outdated images on in-scene monitor displays and a Vulkan crash involving monitor cameras on GPUs without packed RGB16F render-target support. Additional fixes address modified-scene saving and soil mass sensor behavior following keyframe restoration.
