It is December 1891 and the East End of Glasgow is languishing beneath a thick, suffocating shroud of fog which is harbouring within its grasp, evil personified. A vicious murder has been discovered, a young woman the victim.
DI Ben Pollock finds himself caught up in a burgeoning case where the dead are beginning to look like outnumbering Pollock's investigating team. Suspects flit in and out of Pollock's sight like phantoms in the fog, with Pollock being vilified for his lack of progress.
Tension has risen to fever pitch, anger frequently resulting in violence on the dark, cobbled streets and alleys, amid recriminations and an overwhelming fear that death in human form is walking the streets and the police seem powerless to stop it.
It is a race against time for DI Pollock to solve the case before the simmering tension erupts uncontrollably.
