Read any P&ID and size any line - the two skills every plant, process and project engineer is assumed to have

What you'll learn

Read any P&ID with confidence - symbols, tags, line numbers, control loops and safety functions
Size a line properly on velocity, pressure drop and economics, and know which constraint is governing
Trace a process stream through a full drawing set and answer a real engineering question from it
Calculate available NPSH, compare it against required, and defend the margin you have set
Decode an instrument tag using the ISA 5.1 letter code, and follow a loop from transmitter to final element
Build a system curve, overlay a pump curve, and predict how the operating point moves
Handle two-phase and compressible services without pretending they behave like single-phase liquid
Assess water hammer and hydraulic transients, and specify valve closure times that avoid them
Read a drawing for four different purposes - operations, safety study, modification and construction
Question an inherited calculation or a stale drawing before you put your name on either
Requirements

No prior drawing or hydraulics experience is required - both modules are built from first principles
Any engineering, technical or operations background is enough to follow the course
Comfortable with basic algebra - every calculation is worked step by step
Helpful but not essential: access to a P&ID or a system from your own plant or project
No software or purchases needed - no CAD package and no hydraulic package is required
Modules can be taken in any order, although reading the drawing first makes the hydraulics land faster
Description

This course contains the use of artificial intelligence.
▸ Nobody teaches the fundamentals. They are simply assumed.
There are two things every engineer on a process plant is expected to be able to do from the first week: read a P&ID, and work out what a fluid is doing in a pipe. Neither is taught properly. Drawing reading is picked up by osmosis over years of guessing, and hydraulics arrives from university in a form that does not survive contact with a real system.
The gap is rarely admitted, because admitting it is uncomfortable. It shows up instead in the meeting where somebody follows the conversation rather than the drawing, and in the calculation that was inherited as a spreadsheet and has never been questioned since.
This masterclass closes both gaps in one place, deliberately and from the ground up.
▸ What is inside
Two complete modules, each a full course in its own right
P&ID READING & INTERPRETATION - the drawing family and where the P&ID sits within it; equipment, valve and instrument symbology; the ISA 5.1 identification system; control loops, interlocks and safety instrumented functions; relief, flare and utility content; reading a drawing for operations, for a safety study and for a modification; and how P&IDs are developed, revised and kept current.
FLUID MECHANICS & HYDRAULICS - fluid properties, pressure, head and flow regime; friction and minor losses; line sizing methodology; two-phase flow; pump and system curves, NPSH and cavitation; control valve interaction; hydraulic transients and water hammer; compressible flow, gas line sizing and choked flow; flow measurement; and a complete worked system with the errors that recur across projects.
▸ What makes this different
Fundamentals content is usually either academic or trivial. This is neither. Every topic is taught at the level an engineer is actually expected to work at - the calculation worked by hand and then interrogated, the drawing read for a purpose rather than admired, and the assumption that most often makes the answer wrong named explicitly.
Where practice varies by company, project or jurisdiction, this masterclass says so rather than presenting one house style as universal. Where no standard governs at all - and in both drawing conventions and hydraulic rules of thumb that is frequently the case - that is stated plainly, so you know which of your habits are Requirements
and which are simply local.
▸ Who this is for
● Graduate and early-career engineers building the foundation nobody sat them down and taught
● Process, mechanical and project engineers who use both skills daily and were never formally trained in either
● Operations, maintenance and commissioning staff who work from drawings and chase systems that will not perform
● Instrument, control and safety engineers linking loop diagrams and studies back to the plant drawing
● Engineers moving into process industries from another sector, or into a company with unfamiliar conventions
● Experienced engineers filling a gap they have carried quietly for years
▸ Why learn it here
Taught by a Chartered Engineer (CEng MIMechE) with over fifteen years delivering safety-critical projects in oil, gas and energy infrastructure - from the perspective of someone who has had to use these skills on live projects rather than teach them from a syllabus.
▸ What you get
● Two full modules of structured on-demand video across 40 lessons and ten sections
● A final exam
● All lectures presentations downloadable
● Lifetime access on mobile and TV, and a certificate of completion
Further modules are added to this masterclass over time and existing students receive them at no additional cost.
▸ No prior experience is required - both modules are built from first principles. Any engineering, technical or operations background is enough to follow them, and comfort with basic algebra is all the mathematics needed.
Enrol now and stop working around a gap you were never given the chance to close.
