47 Royal Marine Commando played a distinguished part in the Second World War. It landed with the Allied D-Day force at Gold Beach, before breaching the German defences and marching 12 miles behind enemy lines to attack Port-en-Bessin.
Outnumbered and outgunned, the men of 47 Cdo prevailed and the port, vital to the British Army's petrol supply and its link-up with the American troops at Omaha, was liberated.
In the year that followed, the Commando fought a series of headlong battles with the retreating German army. This culminated in the landings at Walcheren, described by Eisenhower as one of the 'most gallant and aggressive actions' of World War II.
John Forfar, their medical officer, is ideally placed to describe the reality of a commando unit at war: the intense dangers; the losses and triumphs; and the courage and determination of an elite fighting force.
'It is doubtful whether in their long, distinguished history, the Royal Marines have ever achieved anything finer.' Lieutenant-General Sir Brian Horrocks
