NOTE: THE DESCRIPTION BELOW APPLIES TO ALL 3 MODULES.Level 1-Story 10, Uncle Sim and the Well Signal Bell is a story about the early settlers and pioneers and how valuable a well was to everyone in the family.At the time of the story, Uncle Sim an old man explains to Jan, his granddaughter, how he and his "mama" and "papa" built a water well by their home. It explains the hard work involved and how everyone in the family contributed to digging the well.During the time of Uncle Sim, all wells were dig by hand and even many neighbors helped dig. When the well was finished, a stone rim or wall, and many times a well cover was built around it and a bell was placed over the well to signal neighbors about what's happening in the area.The story is written around the phonetic elements of the short /e/ and letters y, v, w, and the letter blend /lp/ and shows the reader how each letter is used in words.The MAIN IDEA, "Much Can Be Accomplished When Families Work Together," and shows how families working together can become closer and get many things done for their family.The PRESTORY BACKGROUND tells about how wells were dug, what they were used for and how a bell was used to provide a way to signal neighbors living within hearing distance of your bell. In addition, the prestory background tells about the settling of land by families looking for their own land and what they had to do to survive the difficult conditions.LISTENING TO THE STORY WITHOUT NARRATION allows the student to hear the words pronounced along with viewing the story on screen, demonstrating the relationship between letters, words and sounds.PHONICS, WRITING AND SPELLING provides the student with creative ways to listen to their voice, and to recognize the sound that's spoken by others.These activities are:· Auditory Recognition· Writing Directions· Body Writing· Sound Sentences for reading and writing· Quickie Questions· Blends and Words to Sound, Read and Spell, and· Sight WordsFICTION NONFICTION WRITING includes several genres that the CompuRead program stories are written around.
