Old Glory Collectors Series - April 2023
English | 100 pages | TruePDF | 26.0 MB

Steam Road Locomotives P2 - As they worked, rusted away and found their way into preservation.

Following on from the acclaimed January 2023 release of our Steam Road Locomotives Part 1, put together by Peter Love the editor of Old Glory which featured Allchin, Aveling and Burrell, we now turn to part 2.

This time, Peter continues to look at Burrell's with pictures and an update on what's happening with ex Australian 1909 Burrell 8hp No. 3131 DCC that's now called Swanley. He also looks at an engine he has know all his life, 1923 Burrell No. 3941 Badger with some evocative pictures of the engine. He then finishes this section of the book with No. 4093 Dorothy the youngest of the breed.

After a very quick look at Clayton & Shuttleworth we move to Foden, this underrated manufacturer of road locomotives carrying possibly the best compound cylinder block in the business. More of their road locomotives have lasted into preservation overseas than in the UK and we take a look at some of these based in Tasmania, besides looking at the mighty 1914 Foden 6hp No.4752 Sandy McNab in the UK.

We then move on to Garrett, where we take a look at many of their unsuccessful road locomotives in black and white, thanks to the help of Mick Walters.

That is followed by our first look at John Fowler products, the most famous road steam manufacturer of them all, with many black and white pictures from the collection of W. S. Love and others. As always Bob Moorman and the editor add colour pictures where required, taken over the last 50 years to make this series very unique. A third part is planned, featuring more John Fowler products and other makes like Marshall and McLaren.
