Description
This first section of this course discusses the occupational health and safety hazards, recommended controls, and suggested best practices related to different methods of metal working, welding and joining in an industrial setting. Topics include a review of various approaches to metal joining (welding, brazing, soldering, etc.) with detailed information on welding processes and their associated hazards and control strategies, metal working machinery, foundry operations, safeguarding issues, unique problems with drive and operation system, and health hazards with molten metal working (including industrial diseases due to exposures).This second section of the course covers basic information relating to the occupational health and safety hazards, recommended control strategies, and suggested best practices for woodworking activities in industrial settings. Topics covered include common woodworking machinery (table saws, planers, lathes, etc.), common problems with bad habits, physical guarding challenges, personal protective equipment, and housekeeping issues.Topics include:Types of Metal Joining - Various forms of welding, brazing, soldering, etc.; fluxGas Welding Systems - Tanks, regulators, caps, hoses, torches, blowback devicesMain Welding Hazards & Controls - Fumes, particulate, gases; grinding; noise; ultraviolet radiation; heat; use of barriers and shields; specialized PPE; fire watches & inspectionsMetal Working Machinery - Presses, punches, lathes, CNC, water jet / laser, etc.Metal Machinery Mechanics - Brakes, types of clutch operation (full-revolution, part-revolution); anti-repeat features; guardingFoundry - Main hazards and issues (lighting, noise, heat, equipment); health hazards; ventilation and housekeepingWoodworking - Main hazards and controls (guarding, rotating blades, kickback, etc.)
