Description
This course contains the use of artificial intelligence. The last time the Euro changed form, it was January 1, 2002. People queued at ATMs at midnight. Shops had dual-price stickers for months. Twelve countries simultaneously retired their national currencies - the Deutsche Mark, the French franc, the Italian lira, the Spanish peseta, and eight others - and replaced them with a single set of banknotes and coins. It was a logistical feat on the order of a moon landing: 14.9 billion banknotes and 50 billion coins were distributed in a coordinated rollout that remains the largest cash changeover in history. The project reshaped the daily economic life of 300 million people overnight, eliminated foreign exchange friction across an entire continent, and created the world's second-largest reserve currency. It had taken over a decade to negotiate, from the Maastricht Treaty in 1992 to the physical launch in 2002, and the political will required was immense - countries surrendered monetary sovereignty, a power that most political theorists consider fundamental to statehood. This training is about the next transformation of that magnitude, except the new form factor is invisible. No coin to hold up to the light, no watermark to check - just software. But unlike the 2002 changeover, which replaced one form of money with another, the Digital Euro is an addition: A new form of the same currency, designed to coexist with physical cash and with commercial bank deposits. Nothing gets replaced. The gap being filled is the one that opened when the world went digital but central bank money did not.
