Emperors and Dynasties existed in China as far back as 2200 B.C. With them, generally came oppression and discontent. As each new ruler took their place over the years, both the poor classes and those with some wealth became more and more disenfranchised with the lack of new political views, new approaches to education, keeping up with technological development and the failure to expand into the international world of trade.
During the 1800's, as the discontent rose, secret underground groups began to form and expand, their shared mission to overthrow the monarchy. The people wanted to welcome foreign trade as they knew it would help the Chinese economy. They were tired of being kept poor and hungry at the rule of the latest Emperor or his designate, as some became emperor's when a child or even a toddler.
Uprisings became more and more frequent, with the Han people wanting to overthrow the Manchu rulers. The practice of foot-binding became one of the more barbaric practices to be at the forefront of dissent. Demands for a republic form of government became more and more aggressive. Uprisings grew in number, becoming more and more hostile. Throughout the last half of the 1800's, thousands of people lost their lives fighting to establish what was to become the Republic of China. The Xinhai Revolution was the end result of hundreds of small and large uprisings, largely lost against the Qing Empire, the last dynasty to reign in China.
There were protests by women who demonstrated by unbinding their feet. There were suicide missions by students and journalists. Martyrs were created and honored. Finally, the practice of foot-binding was abolished, under penalty of death. Thanks to those who never lost sight of their goal - establishing a republic in China, those who died did not do so in vain. You find it all in here.
This short-read book is a perfect introduction to the Xinhai Revolutions that has completely changed the course of China history. After reading this one-hour book, you will know the main events of the Xinhai revolution and the birth of the Republic of China.
