Description
"This course contains the use of artificial intelligence."
Welcome to Clinical Dermatology - a comprehensive introduction to the structure, function, and clinical understanding of the skin.
The skin is the largest organ of the body and performs essential functions including protection, prevention of fluid loss, immune defense, temperature regulation, sensation, UV protection, and vitamin D production. A clear understanding of normal skin structure and function is therefore an important foundation for understanding dermatological diseases.
In this course, you will begin by learning thebasic anatomy and physiology of normal skin, including the three major layers: theepidermis, dermis, and hypodermis. You will explore the five layers of the epidermis-thestratum basale, stratum spinosum, stratum granulosum, stratum lucidum, and stratum corneum-and understand how keratinocytes progressively differentiate as they move toward the skin surface.
The course also examines the major cellular components of the epidermis, includingkeratinocytes, melanocytes, Langerhans cells, and Merkel cells. You will learn their locations and roles in keratin production, pigmentation and UV protection, immune surveillance, and sensory function.
You will also exploreepidermopoiesis and desquamation, including epidermal renewal, keratinization, cell migration, and shedding of superficial skin cells. The course explains thedermal-epidermal junction, including the basement membrane, hemidesmosomes, rete ridges, and dermal papillae.
The course then introduces the structure of thedermis, including its papillary and reticular layers, collagen and elastin, fibroblasts, macrophages, mast cells, lymphocytes, blood vessels, nerves, sweat glands, hair follicles, and arrector pili muscles.
Beyond normal anatomy and physiology, the course provides a broad introduction to important clinical dermatology topics, includingbenign skin lesions, pigmented lesions, vascular lesions, acneiform eruptions, dermatitis and eczema, papulosquamous diseases, vesiculobullous diseases, drug eruptions, heritable dermatoses, bacterial, fungal, parasitic and viral infections, premalignant and malignant skin conditions, and pediatric exanthems.
The material also introducesprocedural dermatology, skin pathology under the microscope, and examination questions, helping learners connect foundational knowledge with clinical and academic applications.
Whether you are amedical student, nursing student, healthcare learner, healthcare professional, or beginner interested in dermatology, this course provides a structured starting point for understanding the skin and its clinical disorders.
