No book had more influence on twentieth-century attitudes to theEnglish language in Britain than Henry Fowler's Dictionary of ModernEnglish Usage. Within a few years, people no longer felt it necessaryeven to mention the title and talked simply of 'Fowler'. Adjectivessoon followed-Fowlerian, Fowlerish, Fowleresque-and he eventu-ally received the ultimate linguistic accolade, of being turned into acommon noun. The practice continues. In February 2008 William F.Buckley wrote a piece for the United Press Syndicate on the verbaltraps used by Obama and Clinton in the race for the democraticnomination: it was entitled 'A Fowler's of Polities'
