In einer abgelegenen Landgemeinde wird das kleine Mädchen Mary Lee grausam verletzt aufgefunden. Der vermeintliche Schuldige ist schnell ausgemacht, es ist Mary Lees bester Freund, der geistig zurückgebliebene Bubba. Bubba flieht in Panik, angeführt vom Postboten Otis macht sich eine Gruppe von Männern auf die Jagd. Bubba versteckt sich in einem Feld als Vogelscheuche aber der Mob entdeckt Bubba und richtet ihn hin. Gleich darauf stellt sich heraus das Mary Lee von einem Hund angefallen wurde und Bubba unschuldig war. Die Männer entgehen zwar der Strafe durch das Gesetz, aber bald darauf werden sie von einer geheimnisvollen Gestalt gejagt. Die Vogelscheuche will Rache!
