Description

"This course contains the use of artificial intelligence."
Emergency Room Medicine: Essential Emergency Care & Patient Assessment is a practical introductory course designed to help learners develop a structured understanding of emergency medicine and the assessment of acutely ill or injured patients.
In the emergency room, patients may present with a wide range of conditions, and healthcare professionals must be able to rapidly recognize problems, prioritize care, and perform an organized initial assessment. This course introduces key principles and structured approaches that support effective emergency patient evaluation.
You will begin by exploring the fundamentals of emergency medicine, includingtriage, emergency assessment, and the primary survey. You will learn how theABCDE approach can be used to identify and prioritize immediate threats to a patient's airway, breathing, circulation, neurological status, and overall condition.
The course also coverspain assessment, including important characteristics such as location, radiation, onset, character, intensity, duration, and aggravating factors. Different approaches to assessing pain are discussed to help learners understand how pain information contributes to emergency patient evaluation.
You will also learn the fundamental concepts ofBasic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS), including recognition of cardiac arrest, CPR, defibrillation, shockable and non-shockable rhythms, and potentially reversible causes of cardiac arrest.
Another important area of the course is the assessment ofaltered level of consciousness (ALOC). You will explore common causes of ALOC and learn how structured assessment tools such as theGlasgow Coma Scale (GCS) andAVPU scale can be used to assess a patient's level of consciousness.
The course further introduces important emergency presentations across areas such asneurological, cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, endocrine, renal, toxicological, women's health, men's health, obstetric, paediatric, postoperative, and psychiatric emergencies.
Throughout the course, the emphasis is on developing asystematic approach to emergency assessment and prioritization rather than simply memorizing individual conditions.
By the end of the course, you should have a stronger foundation for understanding emergency patient assessment, recognizing important clinical priorities, and approaching emergency presentations in a structured manner.
This course is suitable for healthcare students, nurses, paramedics, emergency medical personnel, junior healthcare professionals, and anyone interested in developing foundational knowledge of emergency room medicine. No previous emergency-room experience is required. This course is intended for educational purposes and does not replace formal medical education, supervised clinical training, professional judgment, or local emergency-care protocols.
Who this course is for

The course is also suitable for healthcare professionals who want to refresh their knowledge of important emergency-care concepts such as triage, the ABCDE primary survey, pain assessment, Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Life Support (ALS), altered level of consciousness, neurological emergencies, and other common emergency presentations.
