Description

If you want to learn Hindi but theDevanagari (देवनागरी) script looks unfamiliar or intimidating, this course will help you build the right foundation from the very beginning. This course has been designed by Hindi linguistVivek Tripathi, PhD.
The course focuses on the two basic building blocks of written Hindi:vowels and consonants. Rather than asking you to memorize a long alphabet mechanically, the lessons help you understandhow each character sounds, how it is represented in Roman transliteration, and how the sound is actually produced.
Section 1: Vowels of Hindi
You will begin with the Hindi vowel system and learn the commonly used vowel sounds one by one.
You will learn
- the independent vowel characters in Devanagari
- their corresponding Roman forms and diacritic marks
- the difference between short and long vowel sounds
- practical English sound references to help with pronunciation
- how Hindi vowels can appear in independent and dependent forms
The emphasis is onrecognizing the character, hearing the sound, and reproducing it correctly before moving to more advanced reading.
Section 2: Consonants of Hindi
Hindi consonants are not arranged randomly. They form a remarkably systematic sound pattern based onwhere and how sounds are produced in the mouth.
Instead of learning dozens of unrelated characters, you will understand the structure behind the consonant system.
The lessons cover
- the overall organization of Hindi consonants
-guttural/velar consonants
-palatal consonants
-retroflex consonants
-dental consonants
-labial consonants
-semi-vowels
-sibilants
- the Hindiह /ha/ sound
- Roman transliteration with important diacritic distinctions
Special attention is given to pronunciation contrasts that are often difficult for non-native speakers, particularly
ṭa vs ta | ḍa vs da | ka vs kha | pa vs pha | ba vs bha etc.
A Pronunciation-First Approach
This course does not expect you to memorize the complete script immediately. The learning sequence is deliberately simple
See the character → identify the sound → understand the mouth position → repeat the pronunciation.
You will practise with familiar English sound references, mouth-position explanations, aspiration exercises, and repeated pronunciation drills.
Who Is This Course For?
This course is designed especially forcomplete beginners and non-native Hindi learners.
No previous knowledge of Hindi or Devanagari is required.
By the end of these lessons, you should be able to look at the major Hindi vowel and consonant characters, identify their basic sounds, understand the important pronunciation contrasts, and approach the Devanagari script with much greater confidence.
The goal at this stage is not speed. It is to build aclear and accurate sound-to-script foundation that will make later Hindi reading, writing, listening, and speaking considerably easier. Grab a cup ofचाय, and let's begin.
Who this course is for

Beginners with little or no knowledge of Hindi who want to quickly learn to read, write, and pronounce the Devanagari script for everyday use.
