Description
IBC Code Masterclass: Chemical Tanker Safety & Complianceprovides a practical introduction to applying the International Bulk Chemical Code when planning and carrying dangerous liquid chemicals in bulk. Chemical tanker work depends on matching cargo hazards with ship capability, operating controls, and pollution-prevention responsibilities. This course helps learners understand how the IBC Code supports safe, informed decisions before, during, and after cargo operations.
You will examine the relationship between the IBC Code, SOLAS, MARPOL Annex II, and the IMDG Code, while keeping clear boundaries between bulk chemical cargoes and packaged dangerous goods. The course explains IBC cargo entries, ship types 1, 2, and 3, Certificates of Fitness, cargo information, containment arrangements, venting, atmospheric control, and temperature, pressure, and overflow protection.
Learning progresses from cargo hazard profiles and tanker design to cargo nomination review, compatibility assessment, tank and line planning, ship-shore communication, loading, discharge, stripping, tank cleaning, and change-of-cargo preparation. You will use a structured approach to assess material compatibility, segregation needs, ullage and thermal-expansion considerations, data gaps, and escalation decisions. The final section addresses toxic exposure, spills, vapour releases, fires, emergency shutdown, MARPOL Annex II residues, drills, records, and corrective actions.
This course is designed for maritime personnel who need a sound operational understanding of chemical tanker safety and dangerous cargo controls. On completion, learners will be better prepared to review cargo information, contribute to shipboard and terminal planning, recognize when further technical advice is needed, and support safe, auditable operations using vessel-specific procedures and approved documentation.
