Great stories can only be told by those who find the humanity within them.Lee Smart was such a storyteller. With an artful sense of humor, remarkable empathy, and an unflinching willingness to laugh at himself, he recounts his two tours in Vietnam-not as a historian analyzing a war, but as a young Army officer navigating a strange, dangerous, and often absurd world. In 1965, Lee arrived as an American advisor to Vietnamese soldiers who had already been fighting for years. He brought military training, confidence, and a sense of duty. Vietnam quickly supplied the rest: fear, friendship, courage, tragedy, cultural misunderstandings, disastrous adventures, improbable victories, and questions with no easy answers.Lee never portrays himself as a hero. He freely admits to being terrified before his first combat operation-and then recounts how he nearly missed it because he couldn't find his boot. That seamless blend of honesty, courage, and humor anchors the entire collection. In Another Man's War is a collection of unforgettable stories about friendship and loss, adventure and misadventure, and one young American's attempt to do what was right amid the moral complexities of a distant conflict.A conflict that, for the people fighting beside him, was never far away at all.
