Jun Murakami Synth81Z is a compact four-operator FM synthesizer inspired by the Yamaha TX81Z, a 1U rack-mounted tone generator released in 1987. It recreates the character of the original hardware while providing software-oriented features for modern music production.
Software Overview
Synth81Z focuses on the sound and behavior of the Yamaha TX81Z, including its eight selectable operator waveforms and the distinctive "Lately Bass" preset associated with the instrument. Development was based on detailed hardware measurement, covering operator phase resolution, waveform table rounding, envelope timing, LFO response, velocity and controller behavior, and the frequency response of the DAC and output stage.
The synthesizer supports up to 32 voices of polyphony and includes an eight-part Performance mode with layers, splits and multitimbral setups. Software additions such as MIDI control, DAW automation, an editor and librarian, and an integrated effects rack extend the original hardware workflow without changing the hardware behavior when the polyphony is set to 8 voices.
Key Features
- Four-operator FM synthesis based on the Yamaha TX81Z.
- Eight selectable waveforms for each operator.
- Hardware-focused sound reproduction developed through detailed measurement.
- Up to 32 voices of polyphony with selectable 8, 16, 24 or 32 voice modes.
- Eight-part Performance mode with layers, splits and multitimbral setups.
- Continuous pan and an independent LFO for every part.
- Five-slot effects rack with 12 effects inherited from Synth-80.
- Four chorus models: Synth, Studio, Pitch and Digital.
- Delay, Phaser, Flanger, EQ, Compressor, Distortion, Reverb and Arpeggiator.
- MIDI Learn and DAW automation support.
- Editor and librarian for working with a real TX81Z over MIDI.
- SysEx send and receive for voices, Performances and tables.
- .syx and .mid import support.
- Bank builder for managing hardware voice libraries.
Synth81Z combines detailed TX81Z hardware modeling with features intended for software-based production. The 8-voice mode can reproduce the behavior of a single original chip, while higher polyphony settings provide the equivalent of stacking multiple chips. Its Performance mode, MIDI integration, librarian tools and effects rack also make the synthesizer practical for DAW-based workflows while retaining the distinctive FM character of the original instrument.
