Description
Modern Manufacturing Systems provides a comprehensive introduction to contemporary manufacturing technologies, automation, advanced machining processes, and quality improvement methodologies used in modern industries. The course develops an understanding of how manufacturing systems have evolved from manual operations to highly automated and computer-integrated production environments.
The course begins with the fundamentals ofmodern manufacturing systems, including manual work systems, worker-machine systems, automated systems, and computer-integrated manufacturing. Students learn how automation, robotics, CNC technology, and computer-based production systems contribute to improved productivity, quality, flexibility, and manufacturing efficiency.
A major component of the course focuses onLean Manufacturing and Six Sigma, covering concepts such as waste elimination, 5S, Kaizen, Just-in-Time (JIT), continuous improvement, process variation, defect reduction, and the DMAIC methodology. Students understand how Lean Six Sigma principles are applied to improve manufacturing processes and eliminate non-value-adding activities.
The course also introducesconventional and computer-controlled machining, with particular emphasis onCNC machining. Students learn the basic principles of CNC turning and milling, coordinate systems, G-code and M-code, cutting parameters, CAD/CAM integration, advantages, applications, and limitations of CNC technology.
The course further covers importantnon-traditional and advanced machining processes, including
For each process, students are introduced to its working principle, process mechanism, equipment, applications, advantages, limitations, and suitable materials.
By the end of the course, students will be able to understand and compare different manufacturing systems and select appropriate machining and automation technologies for specific manufacturing Requirements
. The course emphasizes practical understanding, industrial applications, productivity improvement, quality enhancement, and the role of advanced manufacturing technologies in Industry 4.0 and smart manufacturing environments.
