Recognizing Trauma in Behavior is the second course in the Trauma-Informed Practice series and focuses on helping learners understand how trauma and chronic stress can influence behavior across individuals, youth, and families. Designed for helping professionals, educators, healthcare workers, community support staff, and human services professionals, this course encourages participants to move beyond assumptions and interpret behavior through a trauma-informed perspective.
Throughout the course, learners will explore how trauma responses may appear in everyday interactions and professional settings. Topics include dysregulation versus defiance, emotional escalation, withdrawal and shutdown responses, hypervigilance, mistrust, and the impact of environmental and cultural triggers on behavior. Participants will also examine how stress and survival responses influence communication, engagement, emotional regulation, and participation in services.
Using realistic scenarios, guided reflection activities, quizzes, behavior interpretation exercises, and case-based learning, participants will practice identifying possible underlying stress responses rather than relying on judgment-based interpretations.
