Steel is the material of ambition in the built environment. Long-span bridges, airport terminals, power plants, high-rise towers, stadia, industrial sheds and transmission towers all owe their existence to a material that is strong, ductile, predictable and quick to erect. The design of such structures demands more than the ability to apply a formula; it demands an understanding of how steel behaves, how members buckle and yield, how connections transfer force, and how a complete structure resists the loads placed upon it.This book has been written to give students, teachers and practising engineers a complete, carefully organised and self-contained treatment of steel structure design. The subtitle describes its scope: fundamental concepts of material behaviour and design philosophy; structural systems such as trusses, industrial buildings, plate-girder bridges and multi-storey frames; analysis methods from elastic analysis to plastic collapse analysis and second-order effects; and engineering applications illustrated through fully worked numerical examples.Design basis. The design provisions follow the Limit State Method of IS 800:2007, General Construction in Steel - Code of Practice, which is the governing code for steel construction in India. Where useful, the corresponding approaches of AISC 360 (United States) and EN 1993-1-1 (Eurocode 3) are compared so that the reader appreciates the common principles behind modern design codes. Material properties, partial safety factors, buckling-curve imperfection factors and section properties quoted in the book were cross-checked against the code and against standard published section tables. Section properties follow the IS 808 tables traditionally published in SP 6(1); readers are reminded that tabulated dimensions of some rolled sections differ slightly between editions and must be verified against current tables in actual practice.Organisation. The book is arranged in six parts. Part I builds the foundations: the nature of steel structures, the properties of structural steel, and the philosophy of limit state design together with the loads on structures. Part II treats connections: bolted, welded, eccentric and moment connections. Part III deals with members: tension members, compression members, built-up columns and column bases, laterally supported and unsupported beams, plate girders, and beam-columns. Part IV discusses structural systems: roof trusses and purlins, industrial buildings and gantry girders, and multi-storey frames. Part V covers advanced topics: plastic analysis, fatigue, fracture, fire and durability, and modern developments such as cold-formed steel, tubular construction and composite action. Part VI brings the pieces together in the complete design of an industrial shed with an overhead crane. The appendices give the properties of the rolled sections used in the examples, tables of design compressive stress and of bolt and weld capacities, a summary of formulae, and a bank of multiple-choice questions with answers; a glossary and a list of references close the book.Pedagogy. Every chapter opens with learning objectives and closes with a summary, review questions and practice problems with answers. More than sixty worked examples show the complete reasoning from loads to final check, with every intermediate number computed explicitly. The figures are original drawings prepared for this edition, and every table is fully ruled for clarity. Cross-references to figures, tables, equations and examples are hyperlinked, as are all entries of the contents, the list of figures and the list of tables.
