2-Italy: finishes the battle of Garigliano, Francis II, defeated, orders the retreat.
5-Italy: plebiscites are held in the territories of the Pontifical States occupied by the Sardinian army and again the annexation wins by a very large majority. Only Lazio remains under papal sovereignty, with the protection of France.
6- United States: Abraham Lincoln is the first Republican to be elected President.
7-Italy: King Victor Emmanuel II of Sardinia, after his victory at Garigliano, returns to Naples. Garibaldi prepared a reception for him by arranging 14,000 men 39 cannons and 300 horses waiting for the king to review them after making his entry into the Neapolitan capital, and there waited several hours, but the king was delayed and arrived this morning. Relations between Victor Manuel II and Garibaldi became tense from their meeting at Teano.
