The Field Before the Name: A Historical Reconstruction of the Emergence of Large Language Fields by Rogério Figurelli
English | August 14, 2026 | ASIN: B0HDJWV2N2 | 218 pages | EPUB | 1.26 Mb
What happens when a scientific object begins to form before it has a stable name?

The Field Before the Name reconstructs the documented emergence of Large Language Fields (LLFs) from an earlier sequence of ideas about intelligence, resonance, machine Fields, semantic structure, intention, coherence, interpretability, and architectures extending beyond the language model itself.
Rather than presenting Large Language Fields as a concept that appeared fully formed, this book follows their historical development step by step.
It traces a research trajectory from the Wisdom Equation of 2017, through the appearance of explicit machine and semantic Fields in 2025, to LLM-facing architectures, the formal naming of Large Language Fields in October 2025, and the subsequent transition from conceptual architecture to engineering and scientific testing.
The result is not a claim that every surrounding idea was unprecedented. Retrieval, agents, memory, semantic-field approaches, context engineering, causal analysis, and compound AI systems have their own histories and independent traditions. The purpose of this reconstruction is more precise: to determine what can actually be established from the dated public record, what appeared independently elsewhere, what changed when the LLF name was introduced, and which scientific burdens followed from treating the Field as an object rather than a metaphor.
Across four stages-formation, constitution, engineering, and proof-the book examines how the research program evolved from asking what transforms intelligence to asking where those transformations live.
It explores questions such as:
* When did Field become an explicit object in machine architecture?
* When did the research trajectory become directly connected to large language models?
* What changed when Large Language Fields were defined as mission-relative, reusable, and versioned architectures?
* How does a Field differ from prompts, RAG, memory, tools, evaluators, or the surrounding AI stack?
* Can a Field remain identifiable when implementations change?
* Can hidden Field structure be recovered through controlled interventions?
* What separates existence from identification?
* Why can the final state of an AI system fail to reveal the route through which it arrived there?
* Why can two locally valid Fields still compose into a globally invalid system?
The later chapters follow the transition from Field-Driven Design and Field Engineering into a scientific program concerned with invariance, bounded existence, predictive recovery, identifiability, causal receipts, and composition boundaries.
Throughout the reconstruction, historical precedence is separated from conceptual similarity, retrospective interpretation from dated evidence, and scientific claims from broader philosophical possibilities.
