The Indic Source Code: Indic Formal, Linguistic, and Philosophical Traditions in Dialogue with Computer Science
English | October 6, 2026 | ASIN: B0HM3JTHKM | 255 Pages | Epub | 8.07 MB
Comparisons between ancient Indian thought and modern computing usually go wrong in one of two ways. They either claim too much, treating every resemblance as proof that the past already held the present, or they dismiss the subject altogether. The Indic Source Code takes neither route. The book begins with a plain question: can historical Indic systems of language, logic, mathematics, epistemology, and philosophy be studied alongside modern computational ideas without romanticising the past or forcing modern concepts into ancient texts? To answer it, the author applies a strict method. Every comparison is placed in one of four categories: Historically Demonstrated, Structural Computational Parallel, Pedagogical Analogy, or Philosophical Interpretation. The categories are not interchangeable. A structural resemblance is never treated as proof of historical influence, and a useful analogy is never presented as historical fact.Across 31 chapters in seven Parts, the book moves from zero and Piṅgala's enumeration to the Kerala school's infinite series, and from Pāṇini's Aṣṭādhyāyī and the Śivasūtras to a comparison with Euclid. It examines Nyāya epistemology and the five-step inference, Mīmāṃsā rules for resolving conflicts between injunctions, Bhartṛhari's theory of language, and current work in Sanskrit computational linguistics. It then turns to Indian theories of mind, Yogācāra psychology, Sāṅkhya, and the question of machine consciousness, before moving on to software design, Indra's Net and distributed systems, ahiṃsā and sustainable computing, and the ethics of artificial intelligence, including explainable AI and adversarial robustness. The final chapters catalogue the book's own unresolved questions, propose falsifiable research hypotheses, and close with an audit that classifies the central claim of every chapter.Where scholars disagree, the disagreement is left visible. Where the evidence cannot carry a stronger claim, the claim is narrowed or dropped. The book does not argue that ancient India had computers, that Pāṇini invented modern context-free grammar, or that Piṅgala invented binary numbers in the modern mathematical sense. Its aim is neither to glorify the past nor to dismiss it, but to establish what can responsibly be said when two intellectual worlds are placed in conversation. For readers in computer science, Sanskrit studies, philosophy, and the history of science who want a careful, evidence-led comparison.
