Smashing Pumpkins were always one of the boldest alt-rock bands of the 1990s. Led by Billy Corgan, the Chicago quartet hailed from the shoegaze school of heavy music (why not release an eight-minute single?) but also embraced influences from scuzzy '70s hard rock and melodic indie pop.
Despite (or perhaps because of) its massive scope, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness became a multiplatinum commercial blockbuster that would later fuel the grand ambitions of future superstars Panic! At The Disco and My Chemical Romance. But thirty years ago, in the post-Nirvana age where modern rock was trying to find its footing, Smashing Pumpkins radiated possibility-and succeeded beyond their wildest dreams.
