ownership, to have made it their own. A vast repertoire of sounds and phrases - the vowels and growls of
Hendrix, the cantilena of Santana, the resonant explosions of heavy metal or the slides of the blues - is global
common currency, reinterpreted and repurposed in every musical situation. These are in our arms, our fingers,
our ears. We recognise them as readily, as unreflectedly, as we recognise familiar voices. The electric guitar
stands at the centre of the most exciting music and the most banal, the most unschooled and the most exper-
imental. As the interface par excellence between the gestural and the technological, it remains at the heart of
the experimental expansion of musical practice and sonic awareness.
